A wonderful week in Wiltshire.
Wiltshire is one of England’s least known counties and yet it has so much to offer within easy reach of The George. Here is our suggestion for an enjoyable week long holiday, only 2 hours’ drive from London.
Day 0
Arrive mid afternoon for tea and cake and then take a relaxing stroll around the garden and play a game of boules before a glass of wine on the terrace listening to the birdsong. Then head for dinner at one of our recommended restaurants such as [….]
Day 1
Take it easy exploring the beautiful historic wool town of Bradford-on-Avon, with a walk along the river to Brunel’s amazing aqueduct, then back along the canal for a session at our partner Vitality Spa before heading for a delicious dinner at The George, our pub in Bradford-on-Avon.
Day 2
Visit the historic Georgian and Roman city of Bath, with its Roman Baths, museums, atmospheric architecture and great restaurants and bars.
Day 3
Stonehenge is a must if you have never been there and continue on to Salisbury with a stop at the beautiful Wilton House, or the well preserved Old Sarum Iron Age Fort. If you don’t fancy going out for dinner after a heavy day’s touring, we can sometimes prepare a light supper which you can follow with games in the drawing room.

Day 4
Stay closer to home, exploring some of our local historic houses and gardens, starting with 14th Century Farleigh Hungerford Castle, then the romantic garden of Iford Manor and finishing with the incredibly well preserved 15th Century Great Chalfield Manor with its Arts & Crafts garden, scene of a battle between the Royalists and Parliament during the English Civil War.
Day 5
Head for a luxurious day at the multiple award winning “The Newt” in Somerset which offers an array of horticultural, historical cultural and culinary experiences.
Day 6
If you like gardens, then there are plenty more to see such as the world renowned Stourhead, then go on to climb the spectacular Glastonbury Tor or visit the beautiful town and cathedral of Wells.
If you have more than six days, you will realise that you have only just started to explore Wiltshire because you really need extra days to take in picturesque villages like Castle Combe and Lacock, the roaring lions of Longleat and the atmospheric village of Avebury, not to mention attractions further afield in the Cotswolds which are only an hour away.
